Tile Portrait and Designs
The Westchester Pollinator
Sunday June 13, 2021
Join us for the opening of our inaugural art exhibit, Ella Ström-Grainger: Tile Portraits and Designs at the Ferargil Gallery, NYC 1930. This exhibition showcases a selection of the painted works on tile included in the original exhibition at the Ferargil Gallery on 57th Street in New York City.
Ella, (b.1889, Stockholm, d.1979, White Plains), studied at the Slade School of Art in London, Althin’s School of Painting in Sweden, and at the studio of André Lhote in Paris, and her work was exhibited in London galleries. The Ferargil Gallery show marked the first exhibition in her adopted country after moving to White Plains, New York with her marriage to Percy Grainger in 1928.
As a painter, Ella was interested in wall decoration and inspired by decorative Swedish tile stoves, pictorial Dutch tiles, and painted Persian tiles. She developed a new style of portrait making, working through the limitations and challenges of painting on a glazed surface by focusing on linear designs. Not concerned with a realistic depiction, she looked to symbolism and allegory in her portraits and tile designs. She created portraits of friends and people she admired, allegorical figures, and settings composed of multiple tiles.
We are pleased to be part of the Healthy Yards Westchester Pollinator Garden Tour! Stop by to see our newly planted pollinator garden and learn about our process to transform the overgrown garden bed into a healthy perennial flower garden. Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers for their guidance, research and designs, and gardening efforts that made this all possible!
