In support of the PGS's mission, the Society’s 2025-26 annual members’ meeting will explore Grainger the Educator. This three-part series will explore Grainger’s often overlooked yet enduring influence as a teacher. The first event in this series is Thursday, October 23, at 4:00 PM EST via Zoom. The presentation/discussion, by Professor Phyllis Weliver, is entitled "To familiarize American youth with the better type of new American music": Percy Grainger’s five summers at Interlochen’s National Music Camp. Follow this link for more information and to register for the initial event.
Event two will be a selected zoom presentation from the March, 2026 Percy Grainger Symposium at Brigham Young University. Event three will include Dr. Paul Jackson’s analysis of Grainger’s NYU and Australian Broadcasting Commission lectures, revealing Grainger’s universal, deeply reflective approach to the cultural and emotional power of music. (See below for an introduction to this topic in the Grainger Journal.)
Each program year, PGS presents a series of several meeting focused on one theme, plus bonus meetings, to explore Grainger's work. If you have ideas for future members’ series topics, or bonus meetings, we warmly invite you to share them with us at info@percygrainger.org.

Aligned with our 2025–26 theme, Grainger the Educator, this edition focuses on the under-explored area of Grainger's life as a music educator. The many forms of his educational work are highlighted in this issue, particularly his landmark course ‘A General Study of the Manifold Nature of Music' from his appointment as Head of the Department of Music at New York University (1932-1933) and his lectures as a broadcaster for the Australian Broadcasting Commission (1934-1935), 'Music: A Commonsense View of all Types’ (also reproduced in this volume under the title ’12 Illustrated Lectures by Percy Grainger in Melbourne'). The Grainger Journal is a twice-yearly publication devoted to the study of the music, life and cultural contribution of Percy Grainger. In celebration of the Percy Grainger Home & Studio (PGH&S) receiving a capital grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), Senator Shelley B. Mayer visited this July to tour the house and learn more about Percy Grainger's life and work. Senator Mayer was especially interested in our preservation efforts, commending the PGH&S for its placement on National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior and it significance to the White Plains community. As a strong supporter of arts, Senator Mayer was happy to offer suggestions for connecting PGH&S with additional arts and cultural organizations throughout the region and across New York State to share our work and mission.
We are incredibly grateful to Senator Mayer for connecting with us and exploring Percy Grainger's life, especially his four decades in White Plains, as captured in her visit to the house!

The Percy Grainger Society is proud to announce Carthage College’s virtual concert: Elastic Scoring and Tuneful Percussion. The performance will be livestreamed on November 19, 2025, at 7:30 AM - 8:30 PM (CST).
This event, hosted by Professor James Ripley—Life Member of the Percy Grainger Society—offers a unique and illuminating journey into Grainger’s ground-breaking work for percussion ensemble, demonstrating innovation that predates many better-known milestones in the field. Sharing the podium with Dr. Ripley will be Michael Kozakis, percussion instructor at Carthage and DePaul University.

About the Performance
Commenting on the program, Prof. Ripley shared,
I’ve been really inspired by the activity of the Grainger Society in recent years under Paul Jackson's leadership, and I wanted us to contribute to that momentum. Having done a similar concert at Eastman, I felt it was important to offer students a memorable experience exploring Grainger’s unique sounds and innovations firsthand. Grainger was a central figure in the development of the percussion ensemble, and we are excited to perform this program in the A. F. Siebert Chapel where the acoustical environment will truly showcase the percussion.
This event is an invaluable opportunity to experience rarely performed works, rediscover Grainger as a visionary in percussion writing, and enjoy the distinctive voices of instruments that shaped early 20th-century musical experimentation.
The live performance at Carthage College will be livestreamed via this link.
