Community Enjoys a Memorable Afternoon at Annual Open House

Curt Ebersole PGHS Tour

The Percy Grainger Home and Studio opened its doors to the community for an exciting afternoon of tours and music at the annual Open House on April 16, 2023. Reaching the maximum capacity of fifty guests for the event, two groups were guided through the home by Percy Grainger Society Secretary and Treasurer, Susan Colson.

Visitors were also treated to performances of music by Grainger and his contemporaries by Paul Cohen and his colleagues Anna Keiserman (piano), Yo-yo Su (tenor and baritone saxophones), and Tyler Sakow (alto and tenor saxophones). If you couldn't make it to the Open House, follow this link to view the full concert -- engineered and livestreamed at the Open House by Percy Grainger Society Collections Chair, Matthew McGarrell!

Volunteer Spotlight

Open House Welcomes Volunteers

Above: Maci Bianco (center) leads tour of the music room during the 2023 PGHS Open House. New volunteers Brittany Askew (back row, left) and Keon Riggans (back row, second from left) join the tour with members of the community.

From event planning to guiding visitors, our PGHS volunteers were fully immersed in the activities of the day during the April 16th Open House. Maci Bianco, who joined our volunteer program in January, has been visiting the house weekly to research material for blog posts and prepare for tours. We celebrated her first official engagement as a tour guide during the Open House as she led visitors through the music room.

New volunteers Brittany Askew and Keon Riggans toured the home for the first time at the Open House, experiencing the living history of the Graingers' lives in White Plains. Keon, a first-year student at Pace University, was excited to join the volunteer program as part of his coursework in civic engagement. Brittany, who recently moved to the Hudson Valley from Metro New York, enjoyed the afternoon's tours and music, meeting guests and staff, and assisting as the event came to a close. She shared,

Volunteering at the Percy Grainger Home and Studio is my way of giving to my new neighborhood and meeting the wonderful people here. From the moment that I stepped inside, I felt the magic and history of the home, and I believe everyone should get to experience it for themselves.

A very special thank you to veteran volunteer Stewart Lee, who assisted Susan Colson and Anne Ocone in the weeks leading up to the open house and throughout the afternoon.
